Hello from the future!

Post by gaijinguy »

I live in Kumamoto, Japan, so about 14 hours ahead of the East Coast US, 17 ahead of the West Coast and ahead about half of that for Europe (thus, the future). My timeline begins with Speed Racer anime and some tokusatsu like Space Giants and Ultraman back in the mid 70's in the suburbs of Atlanta. Later came Battle of the Planets and Star Blazers. In the mid-80's I met other anime fans and got exposed to tons of stuff thanks to fandom. Though I started focusing more on manga, I still had some favorite shows, OVAs, and movies. Robotech (Macross) was mind-blowing, and Megazone 23 and Bubblegum Crisis were gold. I moved to Japan in the mid-90's and I've been here ever since. I've been making fanzines since 2000 selling them here at Comiket and similar events. Now I teach manga history (also monster culture and translation) at uni and I've published research on comic book sound effect translation and manga & monsters. I've got to meet several of my manga/anime heroes and so I consider myself pretty lucky.

Aye, welcome to the boards, Gaijinguy. I'd love to attend Comiket one of these days, and I'd be happy to check out your 'zines if I do.
BTW, I'm a fan of Robotech/Macross as well! :) I finally met Tony Oliver at a con about a month ago.

Welcome to the forum! Happy to have you here. I've also just subbed to your channel, looks interesting! Have you always lived in Kumamoto since moving to Japan or have you lived in other parts of the country?
